Red deer is one of the largest deer species in Europe. It is found primarily in large woodland areas. As it is still being hunted it remains an animal difficult to observe despite its size. At present the species can only be found in the Southern part of the department, but it is slowly colonising its ancestral territories and sightings North of the Plateau de Millevaches are becoming more common.
