Observing adult foxes is difficult enough, but finding an occupied earth with cubs is even more delicate. Vixens are highly suspicious of anything unusual in the vicinity of their cubs and won’t hesitate to move them if they feel the slightest threat. Potentially this may force them to choose a den less safe and put the cubs at an increased risk. It is therefore absolutely essential to spend time upfront and from a safe distance getting used to their daily schedule before even thinking about any images. Even then I limit the amount of time spent taking pictures.
Yet being able to spend time with these innocent, clumsy cubs and watch them play and discover the world is simply fascinating and highly rewarding.
Unfortunately thousands of innocent fox cubs are slaughtered in France every year. Foxes can be trapped, shot or their earths dug out and entire families are wiped out in the process.
