Welcome to my website about wildlife and nature photography.
Since I swapped my old camera for a DSLR model many years ago, a considerable number of images have accumulated on my hard drive. Unfortunately very few of them ever made it into print form, mainly as calendars for friends and family. I have been wanting to share my photographic adventures with a wider audience for a long time, but in more detail than it is possible through social media, which is how this website came about. At the same time I very much hope to increase people’s awareness of the fragile beauty of the wildlife and other natural treasures surrounding us, and the urgency to protect them.
For near enough 15 years the Creuse region in the heart of rural France has been my new home. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of France, an area forgotten and hardly known, even by the French. When I tell people where I live their reaction tends to be either an idulgent smile or outright laughter, depending on how polite they are. Yet anybody mad about wildlife will understand that living in such a wild and remote place is a privilige! Unfortunately hunting is still very wide spread and popular in rural France and animals have learned to avoid people. Hence, they remain difficult to observe and photograph and even with a lot of time and patience the photographic harvest tends to be modest compared to some other countries.
Mentalities regarding animals classed as vermin or pests under French law, such as foxes, badgers, and martins sadly evolve far too slowly. These heavily persecuted species have a special place in my heart – Nature is a complex balanced structure where every animal has it’s place, left to it’s own devices none of them are a danger, with the exception of human beings. I try to convey the beauty and importance of these animals within nature with my images, in the hope that one day mankind will let them live in peace.
A large part of my images have been taken within a perimeter of a few kilometers around the house. I love getting up early, preferably before dawn and follow the tracks of foxes, deer or martins in the first light of the day. At this early hour the light is magical and nature regularly blesses me with surprise encounters. All you have to do is to keep eyes and ears open and to let yourself sink into the fields and woodlands until you become part of them. Many unforgettable moments are engraved in my memory, some of which I have been lucky enough to capture with my camera.
There is absolutely no doubt that the Creuse region has more natural treasures than I could ever explore in a lifetime. Yet, from time to time I feel the need for a change of scenery. My preferred destinations are countries in the far North, such as Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland or Canada. I simply love those wild and untamed landscapes, where there is little human trace and nature is left to it’s own devices. Amidst these grandiose expanses of untouched wilderness human beings seem tiny and have no choice but to respect the natural forces. And I love the unique light far up North, which doesn’t exist anywhere else.
I hope that my pictures inspire you to follow me on my photographic adventures and that they convey at least part of the magic of those fleeting moments.
